Porcelain Crowns (Caps)
Porcelain crowns have a wide range of uses such as narrowing of gaps, correction of teeth sticking out, lightening of teeth, and reducing crowding. Additionally, crowns can also be used for cosmetic reasons. Alternatively, crowns could be a good solution to a badly decayed tooth or large fillings.
First, a thin layer of tooth is shaved off allowing the crown to fit correctly on your tooth. During the patients first visit, a mold is custom made.
The crowns are made specifically for that particular tooth. During the next visit, the crowns are bonded using a special bonding material. Once the bond has taken place, the patient can eat normally using the crown.
Crowns have been used for a long time. Traditionally, crowns were bonded to the tooth using a metal-base in an effort to make them more durable. However, recent advances in dentistry has led to some dentists using pure porcelain that is strong enough for even the hard working molar teeth. This has an inherent benefit. After aging, the patient's gum line recede and this ugly gray line would reveal itself. Subsequently, the natural look would disappear when using the metal framework.
The advantage of pure porcelain is that it is near identical in color making it look natural even after gum lines recede. Our patients are happier long term which is why we use this type of crowns very often.
