Periodontal Disease
Periodontal disease can be broken down into two types. First being gingivitis and the second, periodontitis. They both affect periodontal tissues.
Gingivitis is the less destructive type and it entails inflammation of the gums most commonly caused by plaque. This is called "plaque-induced gingivitis". When untreated, the more destructive form of periodontal disease can form called periodontitis. Malnutrition, viruses, genetic factors, trauma, and bacteria are among other causes of gingivitis.
Periodontitis leads to loss of alveolar bone which surrounds the teeth. Once ignored, it can lead to tooth loss. While the factors mentioned above can lead to periodontitis, your immune reaction to these microorganisms can also cause periodontitis. A good dentist uses a probe to check for tissue damage in addition to using digital x-rays to look for any bone loss. Dr. Kazerooni specializes in periodontology and is very aggressive with teaching patients "best at home practices" to minimize chances of this disease. Early detection of periodontal disease is very important which is why it is recommended for everyone to see their dentist twice a year.
Treatment & Prevention of Periodontal Disease
Treatment of periodontal disease includes a thorough cleaning of the pockets of bacteria via multiple methods. These methods may include, but are not limited to, scaling, root planing and or antibiotics. At times surgical treatments may be necessary. However, a good dentist should educate patients on adopting a practical oral hygiene that fits the patient's lifestyle.
